We are beginning to plan for the 2022- 2023 school year.

If your child will be returning to LCDSfor school in September, please consider adding your name to a Board or Committee position for next year.

Some of our Board Members may stay on in their positions, other families will be moving on to Kindergarten or Grade One with their local schools. We cannot offer the wonderful program and special events without the extra support and assistance of our members in these positions.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1638223122417{margin-bottom: 33px !important;}”]

Happy 2022 LCDS families!

We hope your winter holiday season was an enjoyable one! Already three weeks into 2022, we’re still dealing with COVID, still experiencing crazy weather and the Oilers are still not playing well. Hopefully, there are better things on the horizon.

Thank you to all who attended the AGM earlier this week. A lot of great information was shared about our year to date, the months ahead, and the next school year. We decided to renew the Bingo license for another 2 year term and we are going to begin building our plan for corporate sponsorship and yearly donation drive.

Welcome back to two former families, the Mahood family and the Halabi family. They are joining us for the remainder of the year.

Registration for next year is beginning again. Please see Ms. Shannon for forms if you are returning. If you know of anyone looking for a great preschool or kindergarten send them our way.

As you weigh your options for kindergarten, LCDS offers Kindergarten; it’s worth considering that LCDS has smaller class sizes and more in-class support than many
programs in the public and separate school systems. Not to mention a strong early childhood program led by an amazing team!

For further details about re-registering for next year see below or talk to Ms. Shannon. Please also consider signing up for a board or committee position if your child will be returning to LCDS.

We are in need of a Secretary for our Board Meetings and we need two volunteers for the Digital Yearbook (one for AM and one for PM). Please speak with Ms. Shannon if you can help.

Next board meeting is January 26th at 6:00 pm.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1649263207474{margin-bottom: 33px !important;}”]Registration for the 2022-2023 School Year

LCDS Members, if you are planning to have your child return to LCDS in September 2022 either for Kindergarten, Jr. Kindergarten or Preschool, please pick up a registration package from the office before February 7th.

All returning registrations must be in by February 7th in order to secure your spot for September. After February 7th, registration is open to the public and we will not be able to guarantee your registration spot.

If you know of anyone who would like to register their child at LCDS for Kindergarten, Jr. Kindergarten or Preschool, please let them know they can pick up a registration package from the LCDS Office.

We will make individual appointments for families who would like to meet our teacher and visit the classroom, weeknights between 4:15 pm – 5:15 pm on available dates. Let them know to call the school office to book an appointment.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1649263699560{margin-bottom: 33px !important;}”]Kindergarten & Jr. Kindergarten

If your child is transitioning to Kindergarten in September, please
consider LCDS for your child. LCDS offers the same curriculum programming as the
Public and Catholic Boards set out by the Alberta Government.

LCDS has the benefit of being able to offer your child a small class setting with lots
of individual teacher support.

If you are interested in having your child attend Kindergarten or Jr. Kindergarten at
LCDS, please speak with Ms. Michell about our program.

For Jr. Kindergarten you must commit to at least 4 to 5 days of attendance and your
child must turn 5 between September 1
st and March 1st of the coming school year.

If your child turns 5 before December 31st, 2022
they are eligible to register for Kindergarten [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1649263766294{margin-bottom: 33px !important;}”]Scholastic Book Orders

Scholastic book orders will help LCDS get free books for the classroom, which
our kids benefit from. Please order your books thru LCDS for your children at
home.

Scholastic Books has become an online service. If you would like to order books, go

At the beginning of January, the children learned about the different colors, and they
enjoyed presenting their pictures of the colored items from home. They love all the
colored projects they made. Please check them on our boards and walls.

We are really encouraging all the children to be more independent when getting when
dressed and undressed with their coats, snow pants, winter accessories, and backpacks.
We would love to see the children try to do more of this on their own. We would love to
see them find their own hooks and look for their name on their shoe cubbies. This will
really strengthen their fine motor skills, sequencing skills and build their overall
confidence in themselves.

Our classroom playhouse has been recently transformed into a Hospital, and the children
are learning the roles of doctors, nurses, patients, and receptionists. In February we
change up the playhouse into a Grocery Store.

Kindergarten children will start their Home reading books next week. The children will
change their books every day with Ms. Michell. Following L.C.D.S. policy lost or damaged
books will be assessed a recovery fee of $12 per book. These books are part of a set and
they are hard to replace. Please take care of these books and have a fun time reading.

We will send home some booklets for all the children at LCDS to keep at home in the next
coming month. Please read and go over the vocabulary in the story with your children.

Please let me know if there are any ways that I can help support you and your child or
children reading together at home. Remember that reading does not need to be done only
at bedtime. Anytime is a good time to enjoy a story with your child! This activity does not
have to take a long time and it is a great time to spend some quality time together.

In January the Kindergarten curriculum has focused on the Jj, Ss, Dd, and
Bb. February we will be looking at Rr, Kk, Aa, and Vv. Make looking for these letters a
fun activity whether you’re reading a book or driving around to different places.

Our Next theme will be Friendship and Valentine’s day January 31-February 14, 2022.
The children will learn about the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Tiger on
Feb 1st, 2022.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1649264875674{margin-bottom: 33px !important;}”]Teacher Report – Michell Fung (Cont’d)

The children will learn about Ground Hog Day on February 2, 2022.
In early February, I plan to meet with Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten families and
other families who receive specialized services with our LCDS. Please watch your e-mails
for more details.

Our theme for February is Friendship/ Valentines, a meaningful topic for our young
students. Learning about friendship begins at an early age. Learning how to share and
compromise is often hard for young children, whose view of the world is largely selfcentered. Providing children with opportunities to play with their peers, offering
suggestions for compromise, and helping provide possible solutions when necessary are
ways in which adults can help children “practice” the skills of being a good friends. The
examples we set at home and within our friendships are vital in helping our young children
learn “how” to be a friend.

We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day week from February 7- 14, 2022. We will have
special activities for the children every day. The children can wear red, pink and purple
the whole week. We encourage your child or children to either make or buy valentine’s
cards and pass them out in the mailboxes during this week. Presently there are 24
children in the morning class (girls and boys) and 21 children in the afternoon class
(boys and girls). Our teaching staff will have mailbags, as will Sammy, our magical
classroom squirrel. It is preferred that the valentines you bring are not addressed to
individual children, but simply signed on the back with your child’s name. It makes
distributing them so much easier and great practice for writing their names!

We have an in-class presentation, Clay Guys, Thursday, February 17th, 2022

No school on Friday, February 18 th, and Monday, February 21st, 2022, for PD Day
and Family Day

It will be Pink Shirt Day On Wednesday, February 23, 2022. This is to encourage
Anti-bullying with all the students.

At the end of February, we will end with the Farm Animals theme. The children will be
learning about different Farm Animals.

No School for Teacher’s Convention Thursday, March 3rd, and Friday March 4th, 2022.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1649265091178{margin-bottom: 33px !important;}”]Teacher Report – Michell Fung (Cont’d)

In March we have Multicultural Month. The class learns about a new country each day.
The children who are scheduled for a helping hand day in March, from both morning and
afternoon classes will prepare a poster with their parents on their designated country and
present it to the class on their helping hand day. Please practice going over your
questions and the poster with your child since this promotes great public speaking and
they also develop a great sense of pride in their work. The children will each receive a
passport and they will get them stamped when they come to class each day.

Our March Gym Day is on Thursday, March 24th, 2022, which will be our Walk-a-thon. You are asked to get donations ahead of time to raise money for the school. At the
beginning of Gym, they will walk, run, or dance around the Gym to earn that money. The
money raised will go towards new gym equipment and field trips/ classroom events. At the
end of Gym, the children will receive a medal and pedometer to help track their steps. We
ask that the children be dressed for the weather since we will be outside for the Walk-athon at beginning of the Gym Day.

At this time of the year, I often have parents wanting to discuss children’s progress and
placement options for next year. Some families may question a child’s readiness for
Kindergarten or seek reassurance as to whether their child is ready for the “big
school”. Whether to keep their child here for Kindergarten or go on to another school.
Please remember that I do love to speak with you about your children whether they are
moving on or returning for another year at L.C.D.S. I would be happy to arrange a time
with you or contact Shannon in the office to make an appointment.
